Even if we stop burning carbon tomorrow, climate scientists tell us we are still in for 30 years of extreme weather events due to greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. Additionally, any transition to a low carbon economy will take decades to achieve. Bottom line is we are on track for at least a half century of record storms, record floods and record droughts, with repair bills in the trillions and insurance premiums that will become unaffordable for many. Considering this, the concept of resilience has replaced the concept of sustainability among leaders of the environmental movement worldwide. What does resilience mean for the lower north island of New Zealand?
